Huntingtown is a laid-back settlement with a bright future, situated neatly in northern Calvert County, Maryland. This neighborhood is known for being located between two major bodies of water and for occupying one of the best schools in the county.

Between the Patuxent River & the Chesapeake Bay

Huntingtown is belted by Sewell Branch Stream to the east, Ponds Wood Road is to the north, Tucker Creek to the west and the town’s most southern point runs along Bowie Shop Road towards the intersection of Route 4 and 263. Further south from that location is the county seat—Prince Frederick. Chaneyville and Chesapeake Beach are to the north, while the neighborhood is sandwiched between the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay to the east and west respectively. Dares Beach, Eagle Harbor, Dunkirk, Owings, Lower Marlboro and Sunderland are all neighborhoods that are a short drive away from downtown Huntingtown.

Local History

Although Huntingtown, Maryland wasn’t officially established until the 19th-century, the area was settled during the mid 17th-century. As part of the county, it was initially the province of noble English planters who cultivated tobacco and other cash crops. As the area’s population grew, the local economy diversified into shipping, fishing and other maritime trades. The area also avoided the Revolutionary War’s wrath and prospered throughout much of the country’s early history. The establishment of nearby Patuxent Naval Air Station attracted a new crop of arrivals in the early 20th-century and the surrounding neighborhoods have flourished because of it. Now, the town is a laid-back settlement closing in on being an exurban community.

Route 4 & Other Important Roads

The town is bisected by Route 4 and if traveled northbound will take residents near Owings, Dunkirk, and eventually Bristol. From there the road turns westbound and leads you to Upper Marlboro and Morningside where I-495 is obtainable. Driving southbound on Route 4 takes you to Prince Frederick. It’s in Prince Frederick where many travel for fun and entertainment. Other major roads are Route 2, 263, 521 and 261. Route 261 runs along the shoreline through the waterfront homes and leads residents to Chesapeake Beach where the famous Chesapeake Beach Water Park is located.

Housing Stock

One of the best things about living in Huntingtown is its laid-back lifestyle is juxtaposed with affordable land prices. The land for sale is also a great opportunity for families to build their house from scratch, allowing for endless design possibilities. The town’s lifestyle has also attracted younger families from places like Baltimore and Washington, DC, with many of them starting successful businesses in the region. Many of the housing available are detached homes, and since the area is bombarded by the Patuxent River and the Chesapeake Bay, expect plenty of waterfront homes as well.

Travel to Prince Frederick for Restaurants & Shops

Route 4 southbound is a quick hit to Prince Frederick. On this road one will find such appealing shopping establishments like Cato Fashions, TJ Maxx, Wal-Mart, Giant, Kmart and Walgreens among others. Prince Frederick is also home to one of the only movie theaters in the county: Apex Cinemas situated next to Safeway. The county seat is also home to many local corner markets, banks, gas stations, pharmacies and plenty of fast-food destinations. However, if you want something more than a greasy burger waiting for you underneath a light-bulb, then travel to Fiesta Bar & Grill on Central Square Drive.

This home-style Latin American restaurant offers classic Mexican fare served in a casual restaurant with a full bar. Situated across from the movie theater, this place is a great spot for dinner as it features some of the best fish and margaritas in the area. Three Brothers Pizza is near the southern end of the community. NY-style pizza, subs and other Italian-American staples are all served at this counter-service chain. Nagoya Asian Bistro is a wonderful sushi restaurant in Prince Frederick and considered by many one of the best places to eat sushi in the county. Other terrific restaurants and bars in the area include The Green Turtle, La Tolteca Mexican and Sakura Japanese Restaurant.

Important Parks and Schools

The town features a public high school called Hungtingtown High. The Calverton School is a college preparatory, private, day and boarding school in Huntingtown, and is a major attraction for locals and visitors alike. This preparatory school is one of the region’s most storied education institutions and features a sprawling campus that attracts dog-walkers, sunbathers and amateur sports enthusiasts.

Kings Landing Park is located along the shore of the Patuxent River and has a storied history stretching back to Captain John Smith’s exploration. The area is a terrific spot for kayakers, canoeists and fisherman who can enjoy Kings Landing’s access to the river, nearby creeks and plenty of marshes. Wayside exhibits allow visitors to learn about the significance of the river, while the park also features a new equestrian facility, plenty of hiking trails, picnic pavilions, private campsites and rentals for kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddleboards. The area is also a hotspot for wedding receptions.

The attraction of waterfront homes and one of the best schools in the county are legitimate reasons to live in Huntingtown. However, if you’re looking for something more than this town has it. It also provides direct access to DC, Baltimore and Prince Frederick, while featuring a wonderful neighborhood park.
