Guide to Homes for Sale in Maywood

Maywood is one of Arlington’s oldest residential neighborhoods, with an original construction period in the early 1900s. Residents are proud of the historic charm of their community and plan on keeping it that way. Maywood dwellers must follow stringent guidelines that have been put in place to make sure that the architectural structure of the neighborhood remains close to its original construction.
Maywood on a Map
The boundaries of Maywood begin at the intersection of I-66 and Lee Highway, continue west along Lee Highway until it hits N Oakland Street, continues north just before N Vacation Lane, then extends east along Lorcom Lane, and goes back on I-66 until it intersects again with Lee Highway. This neighborhood is a bit smaller than most single-family neighborhoods in Arlington, and borders Lyon Village, Woodmont and Cherrydale.
Homes for Sale in Maywood
Maintaining original charm is key in Maywood, with many of the homes dating back to the early 1900s. The neighborhood was first developed from 1909-1913, and construction continued in the decades thereafter. The majority of homes were built in the Queen Anne, Craftsman Bungalow, or Colonial styles. Unlike many Arlington neighborhoods, teardowns are not popular and not a single home has been demolished since the neighborhood was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means that homes in the area don’t look much different than when they were originally constructed. However, homeowners in the area are very proud of their homes and its common to see well-maintained exteriors, beautiful landscaping and tasteful remodels.
Things to Do Around Maywood
Arlington is full of entertainment, dining, and shopping, all of which Maywood residents have easy access to. The excitement of Clarendon is just a quick drive or inexpensive taxi away. Well-known Arlington eateries and bars like Liberty Tavern, Lyon Hall and Northside Social are easily within reach. On a weeknight, takeout spots and restaurants along Lee Highway are perfect to grab something quick. Favorites include The Italian Store, Burger 7 and Tarbouch. Lee Highway is also full of conveniences, including grocery stores, pharmacies and more.
Enjoying the Great Outdoors in Maywood
This area is full of recreation, with the most notable being Thrifton Hills Park, located on the western border of Maywood. This large park has paths and nature trails, direct access to the Custis Trail, Sprout Run Stream, open green space, benches and picnic tables. The Fort C.F. Smith Park is also nearby, and has 19 acres of space, an open meadow, a trail, opportunities to view indigenous wildlife and an ornamental peace garden.
Traveling Around Maywood
Most residents prefer to travel by car in and around Arlington as well as into Washington, DC and further into Virginia. Lee Highway and I-66 border the neighborhood, which both provide access into DC and out west to other areas of Virginia. Parking also is not an issue in the neighborhood, since most homes are furnished with garages, driveways and/or ample street parking. There is also an access point to the Custis Trail on the southern end of the neighborhood near I-66, which provides bikers and joggers access into DC via the Mount Vernon trail.
Making Your Home in Maywood
Residents of Maywood tend to stay in their homes, including some families who have had generations live in the same house since Maywood’s beginnings in the early 1900s. This neighborhood has an incredible atmosphere, active citizens who participate in fostering the community and a great location close to all of the development in DC and Arlington.

The Italian Store...
..Is pretty much the greatest thing ever. You can walk to this eatery and other local shops and restaurants from any part of Maywood, which used to be a community centered around a bustling trolley-car stop in the early 1900's.
